The best subscription business in America is the car wash

Two bucks of water and soap per visit, customers who forget they're paying, and the real prize is the dirt under the tunnel.

1

The best subscription business in America isn't streaming or software. It's the foam tunnel on the two-acre lot by the highway.

2

Run the unit economics. Best-in-class express tunnels serve a car for $1.50โ€“$2.50 all-in. So a $25โ€“30 monthly member who shows up 2.5 times costs roughly $3โ€“6 to serve โ€” everything else is nearly pure margin.

3

Mister Car Wash, the largest conveyor operator, ended Q1 2026 with about 2.5 million Unlimited Wash Club members generating 76% of its wash sales. It raised the base price to $22.99 and monthly churn barely moved, holding around 5% (Q1 2026 results).

4

The $10 single wash was never the product; it's the funnel. Members wash 2.4โ€“2.6 times a month, retail customers once or twice a year. Lifetime value: roughly $440 per member versus $106 per retail customer.

5

Now the strain. Industry churn hit a record 7.9% a month in Q2 2026 even as membership revenue grew 10% (Rinsed Q2 report) โ€” and about three points of monthly churn is failed credit cards, not people quitting (Rinsed Q4 2025 report).

6

Only ~13% of car-wash consumers hold memberships, so growth means out-recruiting your own leaky bucket. Wall Street's answer: consolidate. Private equity now owns 61% of the express-wash market, up from 13% five years ago (Car Wash Advisory), and Driven Brands just sold ~380 washes to Whistle Express for $385 million.

7

The real asset isn't the tunnel; it's the corner lot. New builds run $4โ€“8M with land, openings fell from 943 in 2022 to about 550 in 2025, and towns from Texas to Michigan are imposing spacing rules and moratoriums.
